Brilliantly-colored in spring and fall and wine or cherry red to red-bronze in the middle months, this is a sturdy and reliable cultivar, but one that is little-known despite the fact that it's one of the old Japanese varieties. It grows to about 20' at an average of a foot a year, but grows faster when young, then slows and spreads with age.
