Villa Taranto

New cultivars and larger sizes:

Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

Another cultivar that illustrates the difficulty in pinning a
description on a Japanese maple. This one starts out purple
in the spring. It then turns dark green, or, depending on the
esposure, red. With maybe some gold highlights. Then comes
the gold with red tinges in the fall. The plant grows in a dome
shape to 6-10', and somewhat narrower than tall. Introduced
in Europe in the 1960s, the tree that is the original source of
of this cultivar is still alive and well in the botanical garden at
Villa Taranto in Italy.

Size #2 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November, they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
