This
is an ornamental plant that also bears small fruit, deliciously flavored
like wild strawberries, but tart, and with a strawberry aroma. Hardy in
zones 8-10, it has small, glossy, dark green leaves with attractive red
and purple new growth. Because of its dense growth, it can make a hedge,
as well as a specimen plant, growing to 5' or more. Flowers are small,
(but cover the plant) pink or white, with prominent stamens. Fruits are
burgundy and blueberry-sized, ready for eating or preserving in autumn.
Name is synonymous with Myrtus ugni and Eugenia ugni. Argentina,
Bolivia, and Chile.
