Tsuma gaki

New cultivars:

Some newly offered cultivars MAY be added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, may be added in September. Once a cultivar sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

Although these are nice photographs, neither really shows
'Tsuma gaki's leaf at its best. The name means, more or less,
"painted fingernails". You can see the reason for the name
in the top photo, but those young leaves have not
yet unfolded to reveal the shapely hand to which the painted
nails belong. Between the soft, pendant early spring leaves
and the the beautiful late spring leaves they become, hardly
anybody who sees this tree in the spring can resist it. Just
so you know, there is also a late summer phase, shown
in the bottom photograph. Never mind, the springtime show
is worth it. The mature plant will be roundish, about 6-10'
in height and spread. Because of its delicate leaf, this
cultivar should be grown in shade. Fall color is orange-
yellow. Essentially identical to 'Tsuma beni', it's a very
beautiful maple, hard to propagate, fragile, and rare.

Size #1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April.

Size #3 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. They are shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
