Tsuma gaki
Although these are nice photographs, none really shows 'Tsuma gaki's leaf at its best. The name means, more or less, "painted fingernails". You can see the reason for the name in the photograph above, but those young leaves have not yet unfolded to reveal the shapely hand to which the painted nails belong. Between the soft, pendant early spring leaves and the the beautiful late spring leaves they become, hardly anybody who sees this tree in the spring can resist it. Just so you know, there is also a late summer phase, shown in the bottom photograph. Never mind, the springtime show is worth it. The mature plant will be roundish, about 6-10' in height and spread. Because of its delicate leaf, this cultivar should be grown in shade. Fall color is orange- yellow. Essentially identical to 'Tsuma beni', it's a very beautiful maple, hard to propagate, fragile, and rare.
