Tsuchigumo

New cultivars and larger sizes:

Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

The crinkled leaves on this cultivar start out red, but soon become bright green. They curl around the twigs in a rather chaotic manner, possibly inspiring the name, which means Earth Spider. This is a character from Japanese folklore who incites and revels in chaos. A nasty character, actually, but the tree is much nicer. It's a moderately fast-growing semi-dwarf to 10-12', of interesting form, and with excellent crimson and gold fall color. It won't be confused with anything else.

Size #2 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November, they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
