Tritonia

Hey, wait a minute.

Although it isn't permissible for a plant genus to bear the same name as another plant genus, there are apparently no rules forbidding animal and plant genera from sharing the same name. The Tritonia pictured above is a sea slug. And a pretty one too, but it shows you that you have to be careful which species you purchase! Gardners may prefer the following:

Tritonia securigera is a small plant, to about 1', notable for its prolific light orange blossoms that occur over several weeks. Though, light, the orange color is darker than depicted in the illustration, and distinctly orange, not yellow. In fact, it's about the color of the sea slug. While sometimes as upright as the illustration, the stems more often arch. We've found this South African native to be hardy in zone 8, given good drainage and a winter mulch.

Tritonia (disticha?) Grows to about 30", with narrow, sword-shaped leaves, and delicate pink fllowers from June or July through September. Prolific at both naturalizing and blooming. Another point in its favor is that no one will mistake it for a sea slug. Zone 9, or maybe 8 with good drainage and a dry mulch.
