Tree sizes and prices

Size #1 trees may be anywhere from 6" to 18" tall, depending on variety and age. Laceleaf varieties are typically not as tall as uprights. Neither, of course, are most dwarfs.

Prior to mid-April, the varieties offered are essentially leftovers from the previous year, and will be somewhat larger and more branched than new grafts. New grafts are added to our list after they leaf out, usually around mid-April. Initially, they may have only a single branch, but they develop quickly.

Although the trees are smallest in the spring, there is also the greatest variety then; as the summer wears on, the trees will get larger, but the most sought-after cultivars will sell out.

In September, we introduce new, rare, and more difficult-to-propagate cultivars. Although the same age as those added in April, they will have had more time to establish themselves before being offered.

Size #2 trees are typically 18-36" tall, and in at least their second year after grafting. They are offered We mainly grow them in gallon pots, but some may still be in their 4" pots; if possible, we pot them down into 4" pots for shipping. Many cultivars sell out before they reach this size, so there is less variety in this size than in smaller trees.

Bare root: beginning in November, we can ship trees bare root, which saves a significant amount in shipping cost for larger orders. However, please read the Winter Shipping page to make sure this is a good idea for you.
