New cultivars: Some newly-introduced cultivars MAY be added to our list after they leaf out, around mid-April. Othersa, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, may be added in September. Once a cultivar sells out, it remains so until the following spring.
|
Heat Stress: Mild temperatures are best for shipping and planting. Maples ordered in summer may have browned leaves, but this is only temporary. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F. Fall is the preferred time for planting; spring is the next best time. |

It seems that wherever there's a red maple, threre's a 'Bloodgood' lurking somewhere in the background. This tree is propagated from a "witch's broom" of 'Bloodgood' growing in Penn's Woods. (A witch's broom is an abnormal tufted growth of small branches.) It's a narrow, upright dwarf to around 6', with leaf lobes that are longer than those on most brooms, but like many other brooms, including, most famously, 'Shaina', the central lobe is often truncated and blunt. In fact, on 'Skeeter's Broom', the central lobe can be nearly absent, and any of the other lobes may be truncated as well. The leaves emerge bright red and turn to deep burgundy over the summer, a color they hold well until fall, when they brighten again. Similar to 'Shaina'. Size
#1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April. |

Size
#3 trees are available beginning in September, and can be ordered
until March. They are shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These
trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in
this size.
