Some newly offered cultivars MAY be added to our list after they leaf out
around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars,
may be added in September. Once a cultivar sells out, it remains so until
the following spring.
Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.
'Sensu' means 'fan'
in Japanese, and the leaves of this cultivar are reminiscent
of folding paper fans as they wave in the wind. The green leaves are
edged in
orange, and in fall the color pervades the whole leaf and deepens for
a dramatic
effect. This was reported earlier to be a man-made hybrid of Acer
palmatum and A. shirasawanum, as was the very different red-leafed
cultivar 'Johin'. Both were introduced by the
Buchholz nursery in Oregon, which now calls both Acer shirasawanum.
Size #1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April.
Orders
placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster
service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter,
