Schotia

(African Tree Fuchsia, Boer Bean)

 

 

Schotia afra -- Hottentot's Bean -- Small tree to 12', with deep green leaves that are reddish when new, and with bright scarlet flowers on loosely arranged sprays at the terminal nodes of the branches. Flowers are followed by 3" pods that start out green and change to rust, then pink when fully ripe. Beans in the pods are edible. Zone 10, Namibia.

Schotia brachypetala, Weeping Boer Bean, is a large semi-deciduous shrub or wide-spreading tree bearing bronze leaves and 1" long crimson flowers with an abundance of nectar for attracting, in Mozambique, Sunbirds. Followed by 4" long fruits. The word "weeping" in the common name doesn't refer to the tree's growth habit, but to its dripping nectar. Southern Africa Zone 10.
