Scadoxus

(Haemanthus multiflorus)
Blood
Lily
|
South
African bulb
with a 10" flower stalk emerging before the leaves in spring, and
developing a large, blood-red, globular, grapefruit-sized flower head,
consisting of hundreds of tiny, tubular florets. Easily grown in pots,
making it easy to overwinter without digging. Better yet, gardners in
zone 8 in the south say they can overwinter it in the ground, given good
drainage and a mulch. Some even claim zone 7. The late-summer flower comes
at a time when not much else is blooming, and is very eye-catching.
