'Sazanami'
A little-known cultivar which has nevertheless been grown in Japan since the early 1700s, and one can see why. Leaves open orange-purple with green veins. They later become dark green, but keep their red petioles. The tree has a layered habit, and the colorful new growth layered with the dark green background give the cultivar its name, which is usually translated "ruffles", but I think is better translated "ripples". The leaves are distinctively-shaped, with center lobe being at right angles to the base, the lobes finely pointed and toothed. A slow-growing, compact shrub to 15-20'.
