Stress
Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

The original Coral
Bark Maple, and by far the most widespread, is the cultivar 'Sango Kaku',
perhaps meaning "coral-painted". It's a vigorous and tall tree for a
Japanese maple, growing to about 30'. The only rap on it is that, in
cold-winter climates, it may be prone to some twig dieback, most likely
due to its vigor; young twigs don't have time to ripen before winter.
However, the same vigor usually makes this irrelevant. A similar cultivar
is 'Beni kawa', the additional merits of
which aren't clear to me. 'Japanese Sunrise'
is perhaps even more vigorous, and it tends to have a lighter coral
on the top of the twig and gold underneath. 'Fjellheim'
is a dwarf cultivar, as are 'Winter Flame'
and 'Aka kawa hime'. |

Size
#3 trees are available
beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. They are shipped bare-root
to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars
are not available in this size. |
Orders
placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster
service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter,
but read this to see if
it's a good idea for you. |
