Like
most large genera, willows come in many forms, and Salix integra
'Hakuro nishiki' is arguably the showiest. It's a 4'x4'
shrub with very showy pink and white variegated leaves in spring and most
of the summer. Shearing to encourage new growth will keep it variegated
all season. Early in it's life, it is stiffly-branched, but as the shrub
ages the branches weep. It has yellow catkins in early spring, pretty
fair yellow fall color, and red twigs in winter. Altogether a most spectacular
shrub, and hardy to zone 6. A Japanese introduction.

Salix repens var. repens is far less spectacular, but is pretty unusual in terms of what most people think of as willows. As its name suggests, it's a willow that creeps along the ground, rather than growing upright. There are actually a few willow species that do this and share the name Creeping Willow. The slender, procumbent branches grow to about 2' long, and bear silky grey catkins that yellow with age, yielding to small, narrowly oval leaves. This variety has glossy, not silvery, leaves. Upper Midwest. Zone 4. |
