New
cultivars and larger sizes:
Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around
mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are
added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following
spring.
Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.
Perhaps the least
typical and most distinctive in the 'Ghost' series of recent
introductions byBuccholz & Buccholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon. This
series is
closely related to the cultivars 'Shigitatsu sawa', 'Aka shigitatsu
sawa',
'Peaches and Cream' and possibly 'Kasagiyama', which share the
characteristics of strong leaf veining overlaid by various colors, and
a
distinctive leaf shape that sometimes includes undulating lobes. (The
leaf
veins are not apparent in the photograph, but the distinctive leaf is
clear at bottom dead center.) 'Purple Ghost' has not been around
long enough for an ultimate size to be determined, but based on its
parentage, something in the range of 10-15' and a semi-upright
spreading habit might be expected. Another cultivar in the series,
'Sister Ghost', is also available in this catalog.
Orders
placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster
service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter,
but read this to see if
it's a good idea for you.
