Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around
mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are
added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following
spring.
Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.
This is one of the lesser-known Acer shirasawanum cultivars that lacks a catchy name like 'Autumn Moon' or 'Red Dawn', but looks exceptional in the yard. Bright green leaves have more deeply and sharply cut lobes than 'Aureum', more like 'Autumn Moon', but bright green in spring and summer. In spring, the fanlike leaves have crimson edging, and in summer they contrast nicely with the red leaf petioles. In fall, there's a dazzling display of red, orange, and yellow. This tree can take full sun and is more vigorous than other shirasawanums, growing eventually to 25'.
