Osakazuki

New cultivars:

Some newly offered cultivars MAY be added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, may be added in September. Once a cultivar sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

A large upright palmatum known for its very large, bold, green leaves
in summer and renowned for its extraordinary scarlet fall color. Some
call this the best fall color on any maple. It is a vigorous grower
to 30', but takes a lot more years to get the third 10 than it
does the first 10. Summer leaves are dark olive green before turning
scarlet in fall. Traditionally grown alongside 'Ichigyoji', which is
virutally identical, except that its fall color is an equally intense
yellow-orange. Tradition has it that the two cultivars were sister
seedlings from the same lot when selected, but this may be
apocryphal. Japanese garden writers suggest placing the two
near a pond to create a double mirror-image. Yikes!

Size #1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April.

Size #3 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. They are shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
