Matsu yoi
When I saw Matsu yoi translated as "waiting evening", I thought "Waiting for evening?" "Waiting until evening"? But it turns out that "Waiting Evening" is the evening before the harvest moon, when you're waiting for it. Sort of like New Year's Eve, I guess. I like this artistic character of Japanese plant names. So much more interesting than naming a plant "Mrs. Mortimer K. Peabody III". The unusual foliage on this shrub starts out green, lightening almost to yellow, then yellow-green, and finally turning red and orange in autumn. The leaves also have an interesting habit of twisting, mostly downwards and sideways, but sometimes upwards and sideways. A Japanese cultivar, but not the original one with this name, which has apparently been lost. Will grow as wide as high, 15'.
