Lion Heart

New cultivars and larger sizes:

Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

For many years, the holy grail of those who search out new varieties to propagate has been an upright red laceleaf, the equivalent of the green 'Seiryu'. Heretofore, all red laceleafs have had the familiar weeping/mounding habit that distinguishes the type. In 'Lion Heart' we have (ta da) uh, not quite reached that goal. But it's a step in the right direction. The habit of this cultivar is 'upward and outward', more in the nature of a lion rampant, as opposed to walking upright like a human. It may reach 10' at maturity, about half the size of a true upright. Color is a burgundy similar to 'Crimson Queen', fading to red-green in the hottest part of summer.

Size #2 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November, they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
