Khan Shan

Although Acer palmatum is most famously from Japan, the species also occurs in Korea and China. 'Khan Shan' is our own introduction, originally a seedling of a tree on Khan Shan, a mountain in the Jade Dragon Snow Range in Yunnan Province. 'Khan' means 'ruler' and 'Shan' means 'mountain' and is also the name of the Serene Dragon. The tree is a dwarf to about 3', with short internodes, and slow growth, similar to often-bonsaied types such as 'Sekka', and 'Kotohime'. In Japan it would be called a Yatsubusa type. Its leaves are green with some red tinges in spring, and are reminiscent of 'Kamagata'. Because of its slow growth, supply is very limited.
