Khan Shan

New cultivars:

Some newly offered cultivars MAY be added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, may be added in September. Once a cultivar sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

Although Acer palmatum is most famously from Japan, the species also occurs in Korea and China. 'Khan Shan' is our own introduction, originally a seedling of a tree on Khan Shan, a mountain in the Jade Dragon Snow Range in Yunnan Province. 'Khan' means 'ruler' and 'Shan' means 'mountain' and is also the name of the Serene Dragon. The tree is a dwarf to about 3', with short internodes, and slow growth, similar to often-bonsaied types such as 'Sekka', and 'Kotohime'. In Japan it would be called a Yatsubusa type. Its leaves are green with some red tinges in spring, and are reminiscent of 'Kamagata'. Because of its slow growth, supply is very limited. "

Size #1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April.

Size #3 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. They are shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
