One of the nicest trees for year-round color and good vigor. New growth is orange in spring, then becoming a golden yellow, then a rich green with lighter tones in summer, then a fine yellow with orange tones in fall. The two leading authorities describe the stature of 'Katsura' quite differently, Vertrees calling it a dwarf shrub to 5 or 6' and even giving the synonym 'Katsura yatsubusa', while Van Gelderen says it is a full-sized tree. I have to wonder if Vertrees was referring to what we call 'Calico', since our experience is that it's a smallish, but not dwarf, cultivar.
