Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

This cultivar is one of the few selected and named by St. Vertrees hisself, who was very careful to avoid naming any but the most unique. I struggled to determine what he had in mind when naming it; "kama" can refer to a posture (habit?) or to a vessel used to cook rice. With "gata", the name might be a reference to the plant's sturdiness, since Vertrees mentions its ability to perform well in extremes of cold, dry, and hot sun. On the other hand, "kamagata" is a kind of knife, and could refer to the leaf shape. Trouble is, the kamagata-style knife is blunt, not long and narrow like these leaves. Or, it could have been some friend's surname. I was disappointed to learn (by finally thinking to look in the back of the book) that 'kamagata' is just the horticultural term for 'falcate', or sickle-shaped. Well, the knife idea was close, then. This little tree will grow to 3' in 10 years, perhaps to 5' in 20-25 years. Its long, narrow, slightly keeled leaves are red-edged in spring, turning light green in summer, then gold, orange, and red in fall. They persist late in the year, and the leaves on older wood are smaller than those on new. The plant becomes dense with age, not leggy. A choice selection and in very high demand for bonsai as well as landscape planting. |

Size
#2 trees are available
beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November,
they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very
limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders
placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster
service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter,
but read this to see if
it's a good idea for you. |
