Kamagata

New cultivars:

Some newly offered cultivars MAY be added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, may be added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

This cultivar is one of the few selected and named by St. Vertrees himself, who was very careful to avoid naming any but the most unique. 'Kamagata' is the horticultural term for 'falcate', or sickle-shaped. This little tree will grow to 3' in 10 years, perhaps to 5' in 20-25 years. Its long, narrow, slightly keeled leaves are red-edged in spring, turning light green in summer, then gold, orange, and red in fall. They persist late in the year, and the leaves on older wood are smaller than those on new. The plant becomes dense with age, not leggy. A choice selection and in very high demand for bonsai as well as landscape planting.

Size #1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April.

Size #3 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. They are shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
