Junihitoye

New cultivars and larger sizes:

Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

We use the Canadian pronunciation, "junee heeto eh?". Acer shirasawanum, recently separated from Acer japonicum, has more leaf lobes than A. palmatum, usually 9-11. A line connecting the tips of the lobes would describe a circle, so the leaves are called orbicular. This cultivar seems identical to 'Microphyllum', with smaller leaves than the species. It will grow to about 15', maybe more in a long time. Samaras (winged seeds) are held attractively above the foliage, which is yellow in fall. Except for leaf color, which is dark green in summer, and its rate of growth, it is pretty much equivalent to the Golden Full Moon Maple.

Size #2 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November, they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
