Jiro shidare

New cultivars and larger sizes:

Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

An unusual and overlooked tree with a unique form,
'Jiro shidare' is not a laceleaf, but adopts a cascading habit
as it ages, its long, slender branches bending toward
the ground like a fountain. Although arrived at in a different
way, the effect is a mushroom-shaped tree like a laceleaf.
The leaves themselves are deeply divided and spaced far
apart on the stems, lending a delicate appearance, but the
leaves are palmate, not dissected. Bright green summertime
foliage gives way to a seriously crimson fall display. May
eventually grow to 10'.

Size #2 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November, they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
