Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around
mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are
added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following
spring.
Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.
The name means
"Feathered Dress", or a dress that an angel
wears in Japanese drama. It refers to the unusual feathery
shape of the leaf lobes. The leaves have no petioles, the
lobes being joined at the stem, and are very distinct and deeply
cut, as well as strongly serrated. The leaves twist and curve
gently, for a very delicate effect. The color is mainly green,
with some pinks in new growth. Fall colors are light yellows
and oranges. According to Vertrees, these trees do not
usually exceed 3-4'. Others say 30', but Vertrees says the
cultivar 'Okushimo' is identical except that
the latter is far
taller and more vigorous, so the 30' figure may be for the
more vigorous cultivar.
Orders
placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster
