Goshiki kotohime

New cultivars:

Some newly offered cultivars MAY be added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, may be added in September. Once a cultivar sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

Bonsai officianados bristle at the notion of grafts, but cultivars need to be vegetatively propagated, and most cultivars don't do well on their own roots, so grafting is a necessity. Here's an exception: 'Goshiki kotohime' is a densely-branched dwarf that grows slowly to only 3-5' in the ground, and is sufficiently vigorous on its own roots that it can be propagated by cuttings, so we are able to offer it at a lower price than grafted cultivars.
The small, crinkled leaves emerge bright pink in spring, then morph into bright, then dark, shades of green, but new growth continues to be pink. The pink new growth is said to be "variegated", and this is supposed to distinguish 'Goshiki kotohime' from mere 'Kotohime'. Yes, the pink new growth has light green veins; does this make it variegated? If you say so. Remaining specimens are about 6" tall.

Size #1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April.

Size #3 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. They are shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
