Gloriosa superba

We offered this plant last year as Gloriosa rothchildsiana, the name given to us by our supplier in India. This year, we bought more of the same plant, along with two other varieties offerd by the same supplier, 'Superba' and 'Wine and Red'. However, it turns out there is confusion in the nursery industry over the correct names (we're stunned. We gotta lie down). The American Horticultural Society says that there is only one quite variable species, G. superba, and some varieties, including 'Rothschildiana'. Purdue University, among others, says that the two are distinct species. Nobody has ever heard of 'Wine and Red'. We'll only know the differences, if any, when we've seen all 3 bloom, most likely this summer. Meanwhile, you pays your money and you takes your chance. We can tell you that the first one will look like the picture.

Gloriosa rothschildiana AKA G. superba 'Rothschildiana' -- Glory Lily -- This tropical climbing lily forms large clumps of fast-growing vines that scramble for 3-6' and produce flashy scarlet and gold flowers with swept-back petals. Hardy only in zones 9-10, but it is easily dug for the winter, or kept in a container to be moved inside when the vines die down in autumn. This showy specimen plant is a South African native, related to Littonia.
