Fuchsia
|
The Fuchsias
we offer aren't the typical large-flowered hanging basket variety,
but some lesser-known species and varieties with distinctive characteristics.
They are considered hardy to zone 8, but may be root hardy a zone
lower with a mulch.

Fuchsia
'Ariel' is
a seldom-seen, small-flowered variety of the Encliandra group, sometimes
trained to a tree form and used in bonsai. Its tiny pink, magenta, and
green flowers are produced in the leaf axils. In the ground, it may
grow from 2.5 to 3' tall, but is hardy only to zone 9, or 8 with a heavy
mulch. Small-leaved and deciduous, blooming summer and fall.

| Fuchsia
'Chang' might be the closest we come to a "normal" Fuchsia,
with showy flowers and a habit suitable for hanging baskets. It is notable
for its heat tolerance; can be grown in full sun in mild, coastal climates,
in afternoon shade in hotter ones. Flower is orangey-red and bright orange
with green-tipped sepals. Sometimes referred to as the Chinese Lantern
Fuchsia, though Fuchsias do not originate in China, and there is another
variety of that name. |
|
Fuchsia 'Corralina' -- A semi-prostrate variety forming a
2x3' dome. Elegant dark pink and purple flowers in abundance from
midsummer until frost.
|
|
Fuchsia
'Golden
Herald'
is
distinguished by the gold coloration of its foliage and contrasting
deep red veins. Flowers are medium-sized, with scarlet tubes
and sepals and a deep purple corolla. Grows to 18" tall.

Fuchsia
magellanica 'Macrostemma'
--
Tricolor Lady's Eardrops. A zone 8-hardy shrub to 30", with
very attractive, strongly vareigated foliage of white, green, and
grey, with a pink blush. Single red pendant flowers.

|
Fuchsia
'Gardenmeister Bonstadt'
is a shrub supposedly to 30", but our specimen is 5'. This one
is notable both for its dark bronze-red leaves, and its brick-red flowers
with very long, narrow tubes. It is vigorous and free-flowering, and
though supposedly tropical, is clearly hardy in zone 8.

Fuchsia
'Hawkshead'. Small,
elegant, pure white gracile flowers that remain well into autumn. A
shrub to 3', hardy in zones 7-10. Rarely seen, limited availability.
