Emperor

New cultivars and larger sizes:

Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

Perhaps, at last, an improvement on 'Bloodgood'. Leafing out 2 weeks later than that cultivar, it's useful for those living where there are late frosts. It also takes hot sun and wind very well without wilting. Stems are nearly black, and the leaf has the same translucency as 'Bloodgood', but is smaller and more delicate, giving the tree a more open, airy appearance. The same bright crimson appears in fall. 'Emperor' is also a smaller tree, growing to perhaps 25' at an average of a foot a year. Growers expect this to become the new standard in red uprights, due in part to its smaller size and greater tolerance for sun.

Size #2 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November, they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
