Crimson Prince

New cultivars:

Some newly offered cultivars MAY be added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, may be added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

This large red upright is similar to 'Bloodgood', but unlike some 'Bloodgood' lookalikes, it actually has some features to distinguish it. It has a brighter red summer color, and is said to do better in hot sun, and to be more cold hardy. (We've never heard of any problems with Bloodgood's cold hardiness, and it's rated for zone 5, but, like most palmatums, it does tend to burn in hot afternoon sun.) 'Crimson Prince' has a bright red fall color. Ultimate height is 25', and nearly as wide at the crown. It began life as a seedling of 'Bloodgood' fairly recently, and is still hard to find. A very handsome tree.

Size #1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April.

Size #3 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. They are shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
