Crimson Queen

New cultivars and larger sizes:

Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

One of the old reliable red lacelaf cultivars, 'Crimson Queen' has been around since the mid-60s, long enough for there to be some big ones around, though it seldom exceeds 6' in height and 10' in spread. It is a good, steady, slow-growing cultivar still useful in small gardens, though it has been somewhat replaced in the trade by cultivars that look similar and grow faster, such as 'Tamukeyama' and 'Garnet'. Unlike some red laceleafs, 'Crimson Queen' is known for holding its color well into hot weather. That color is burgundy most of the year, crimson only in the fall.

Size #2 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November, they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
