Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

There are two trees in cultivation with the name 'Chitose yama'. That isn't supposed to happen, but sometimes does. The version pictured above, the one we sell, has interestingly-colored leaves, with olive greens, tans, and rusts predominating. It won the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1993. A dwarf growing to around 12', its name refers to the mountain near the town of Chitose on Hokkaido, where a number of my friends spent their youth defending our freedom in Japanese bars. However, since this isn't the orginal Chitose yama, it should perhaps be called Exbury yama in honor of Exbury Gardens, where it originated. |

Size
#2 trees are available
beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November,
they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very
limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders
placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster
service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter,
but read this to see if
it's a good idea for you. |
