Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

For many years the Holy Grail of the Japanese maple growers has been a red dissectum (laceleaf) cultivar that has an upright habit instead of a weeping/mounding form. 'Lionheart' is the most recent contender, but it still has a somewhat weeping habit. I think it's arguable that an upright laceleaf has been around for a long time, and it's 'Burgundy Lace'. It's true that the leaves are a bit wider than most dissectums, but I have been known to mistake it for one more than once. In any case, this is one of my favorite cultivars even though it "greens up" in midsummer unless sited so it is protected from the hottest sun but not too heavily shaded. The spring and early summer color is a deep, rich, glowing burgundy, followed by a good red in fall. Though nearly as wide as tall, it manages an airy, graceful appearance, and stays relatively small, perhaps 8' in 10 years, maybe creeping slowly to 12' at maturity. Though it is an American selection, 'Burgundy Lace' received Britain's Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit in 1993. |

Size
#2 trees are available
beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November,
they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very
limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders
placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster
service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter,
but read this to see if
it's a good idea for you. |
