Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around
mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are
added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following
spring.
Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.
A moderately large,
vigorous variety with rich wine-red, deeply dissected
leaves that hold their color well. Somewhat smaller than 'Bloodgood',
it is more tolearant than most cultivars of hot afternoon sun, and so
a good choice for a difficult site. It will reach 15-20'. Spring, summer,
and fall color is pretty much red, red, and more red, with a little
more pink in the spring and a little more orange in the fall. You
might think that this cultivar would have been introduced by Firma
Esveld in Boskoop, The Netherlands, home of the Van Gelderens who
wrote Maples for Gardens and whose nursery produces many new
cultivars. Instead, it comes from Greer Gardens of Eugene, Oregon,
known widely as "the Boskoop of the West". :)

service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter,
