Acer palmatum

Bonfire

New cultivars:

Some newly offered cultivars MAY be added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, may be added in September. Once a cultivar sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

Notable mainly for its flaming early spring foliage and later scarlet new growth that contrasts with the deep green on mature leaves. It flares up again in the fall. A fairly large and vigorous cultivar to 12', it nevertheless has short internodes and so is useful for bonsai. This trait also makes it difficult to propagate, though. There are varying opinions as to what this tree should be called, there being more than one cultivar that is at least sometimes called 'Bonfire', so look at the picture.

Size #1 trees ship after they leaf out, usually early to mid-April.

Size #3 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. They are shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
