Bloodgood

New cultivars and larger sizes:

We now introduce new and selected rare cultivars in Sept., rather than with previously-offered cultivars in spring.
Size #2 trees are also available for ordering only after Sept. 1

Heat Stress:

Mild temperatures are best for shipping and planting. Maples ordered in summer may have browned leaves, but this is only temporary. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F. Fall is the preferred time for planting; spring is the next best time.

The most famous of the red upright Japanese Maples and parent of many others, the ubiquitous 'Bloodgood' will be found in better plantings everywhere. Though perhaps old hat to the connoisseur, it is not so popular without reason. The deep purple-red color is held through the summer better than most, and the translucent quality of the leaves with the sun behind them, can be breathtaking. It is a vigorous tree to 25 feet or more, faster than most cultivars, and it has a graceful, majestic form at maturity. Even the black-red bark is attractive, especially where there is winter snow. Spring and fall colors are bright crimsons, as are the sparkling seeds. Despite its size, its tall, spreading habit makes it suitable for small gardens. It's hard to go wrong with this reliable cultivar. Although priced as a size #1, this cultvar is actually comparable to size #2 in most varieties.

You can order new grafts (size #1) anytime after Jan. 1, but we don't ship them until after they leafed out, usually around mid-April.
We ship with the US Postal Service. Shipping of more than 6 trees to postal zones 5 and higher may incur a shipping surcharge that will not show up in your shopping cart.
