Bewley's Red

New cultivars and larger sizes:

Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

After several half-successes, this may finally be the upright red laceleaf that growers have been looking for ever since time was. Supposedly like a red version of 'Seiryu', this newer Australian cultivar is meant to abandon the weeping/mounding habit of the typical red laceleaf in favor of an upright, spreading habit. We say supposedly because our source of scion, Don Schmidt Wholesale Nursery, says it doesn't live up to those expectations. It still looks like a nice red laceleaf, though. If grown in too much shade, the burgundy spring color does fade to deep green in hot weather, but ample sun brings out the red tones, and red-orange dominates in the fall. Grows to about 10'.

Size #2 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November, they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
