New cultivars and larger sizes:

Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following spring.

Heat Stress

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.

There are a number of unique features in this new cultivar. First, it's
one of the few basically red trees that are variegated. Second, it's
adapted to hot, humid summers, growing well in such hotspots
as Alabama, where it originated. It will also handle full sun very
well, without losing color. The leaves are quite large and very deeply
dissected, opening rose-red and darkening to purple, with a cream
edging. Fall color is orange. A vigorous grower to 12', it still keeps
a compact habit.

Size #2 trees are available beginning September 1, and can be ordered until March 1. Starting in November, they can be shipped bare-root to save shipping costs. These trees are in very limited supply; many cultivars are not available in this size.

Orders placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter, but read this to see if it's a good idea for you.
