Begonia is a huge genus of some 1300 species and a ridiculous number of hybrids and varieties. Not only are there tuberous ones, rhizomatous ones, etc., there are annuals, perennials, shrubs, climbers, and epiphytes. There are so many of them that it makes us tired thinking about it, so we only offer one. That's Begonia fuchsoides, the Fuchsia Begonia, which was given to us by the nice people at Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The books say it should only grow to 3-4', but I could swear that the one at Strybing was much larger. Of course, things always seem bigger when you're young, and I was only 50 then. Anyway, this is a handsome plant with red stems, glossy, bright green, succulent leaves, and rose-pink flowers that look a bit like those of a Fuchsia, hence the name. It's quite vigorous and easy to grow but, like most Begonias, is only hardy to zone 9 outside. It does well in a container, and can easily be cut back to bring indoors, either for the winter or as a full-time houseplant.
