Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around
mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are
added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following
spring.

Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.
This tree has become
very popular as an "improved" cultivar of
Golden Full Moon Maple , Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum'. I disagree.
For one thing, I don't see how that tree can be improved on, unless
by
making it grow faster. Secondly, this is just a different tree. It's
color is
different, and its leaf shape is different, having narrower, more deeply
cut
lobes. Don't get me wrong, this is a great tree. The so-called improvement
is that this tree is more tolerant of hot, humid summers, and that's
a good
thing. But it still isn't the same tree.
This cultivar has
much to recommend it, without comparison. It has
the familiar chartreuse/pale gold color, but this is overlaid by a rusty
red, a very nice effect. It is said to be tolerant of full sun (we haven't
tried it), and to be more vigorous than 'Aureum' (it wouldn't take
much). What every good garden needs, I think, is both 'Aureum'
and 'Autumn Moon'.
