Aspidistra
elatior
(Cast Iron Plant)
|
|
|
An
old fashioned favorite that has become hard to find. Popular in industrializing
England because it could take urban pollution, low light, cold, and neglect,
hence its common name. The PBS incarnation of Sherlock Holmes keeps one
at 221B Baker St. and doesn't allow Mrs. Hudson to pick it up for dusting,
though he needn't worry, it's cast iron. Elementary. An evergreen perennial
to 2 with glossy, upright, narrowly pointed leaves. Inconspicuous
flowers. Zone 7.
