New
cultivars and larger sizes:
Many newly grafted cultivars are added to our list after they leaf out around
mid-April. Others, including small, rare, and hard to graft cultivars, are
added in September. Once a cultiver sells out, it remains so until the following
spring.
Maples ordered in summer may have burned leaves, and look bad, but this is only temporary. Still, spring and especially fall are far better times to ship and plant than summer. We'll delay shipments when temperatures exceed 90 F.
Fundamentalist
Variegationists will envision the streets of Variegated
Heaven lined with the 'Rising Sun Maple'. It's a semi-dwarf that
incorporates white and pink swatches into a basically dark green leaf.
The variegation is not 'sand flecked', but consists of definite sections
of leaf--or sometimes whole leaves--being all white or all pink. In
this it is similar to 'Orido nishiki'. The variegation
on new growth
is more spectacular, and the form more refined, but growth is not as
fast, compared with 'Orido'. Fall color is oranges and reds. The tree
should reach a height of around 10-12' in 10 years. It tends to revert
to
green leaves and, according to the Van Gelderens, should be planted
in
poor soil to prevent this. Otherwise, remove all-green branches.
Like most variegates, it should have shade from hot afternoon sun.
Orders
placed between mid-March and mid-June may take 3 weeks to ship. For faster
service, order in the fall, an excellent time to plant. We can ship in winter,
but read this to see if
it's a good idea for you.
