Arctostaphylos

(Manzanita)

Manzanitas are familiar to residents of California and the southwest, but not much known elsewhere. They have attractive, smooth, mahogany-colored
bark and clusters of urn-shaped white or pink flowers that are attractive to
hummingbirds and butterflies. They are evergreen, early-flowering,
extremely drought-tolerant, and disdainful of fertilizer, in addition to being very handsome. We offer those that will handle clay, as well as sandy soils.

Arctostaphylos 'Austin Griffiths' is one of many Manzanita hybrids (in addition to about 40 species), and one of the most attractive. It has very good red bark, grey-green leaves, and large pink flower clusters. Grows to a height of 10-12', in an upright tree form. A hybrid between A. densiflors 'Sentinel' and A. manzanita 'Dr. Hurd'. Zone 8
