Aloe barbadensis is more commonly known as Aloe vera, an older name. It's also known as Medicinal Aloe because its juices are used to treat burns, among other things, and plants are often kept on kitchen windowsills for that purpose. The plant is so common that it hardly needs a description, but in case you've just arrived here from Mars, it forms a rosette of long, pointed, thickly succulent leaves that take on a greygreen tone. The leaves are punctutuated by soft spines. Grows to about 2'. Needs a frost-free climate or to be grown as a houseplant in good light. Though mainly grown as a foliage or medicinal plant, the flower, shown above, is fairly dramatic.

| Aloe cooperi -- Grass Aloe -- is a grassy-leaved plant that is much hardier than most Aloes, down to 10F, Zone 7b, and evergreen in mild climates. From high altitudes in Natal, Swaziland and Mpumalanga, South Africa, in the moister parts of what are otherwise dry, rocky areas. The flowers, similar in appearance to A. barbadensis, above, appear in the hottest part of the summer, and are considered edible by the Zulu, as are the leaves. This is a small plant, usually to only around 6", but with flowers spikes to 3'. | |||
