Neomarica gracilis -- Walking Iris, Apostle Flower -- An outrageous member of the Iris family; one ofthose known as Walking Iris because, once the flower has faded, the heavy seed pod bends to the ground and starts a new plant. About that flower: three bright white petals pop open to reveal their inner segments of electric blue and yellow. The 2" flower is on a pendulous stem that will reach 3' in length, drooping down and away from rigid, shiny, 2x3' sword-shaped leaves. Zone 9 or adapts well to indoor culture, either as a houseplant on in a cool greenhouse. Rumor has it that its spring bloom in in sync with the lunar phases, but we haven't kept track of this, as it is hard to see the flower at night. Brazil.

Nerine var ex New Zealand-- Diamond Lily -- The bulb sits mostly atop the soil looking dead during the summer; then in the fall a flower stem emerges, developing several pink trumpet flowers on 12-15" stalks. It's only after the flower that the broad, straplike leaves appear (except on young plants not large enough to flower). Zones 7-10. The bulb hails from South Africa, but the variety developed in New Zealand.

Nerine filifolia -- While most Nerine species have broad, straplike leaves, Nerine filifolia has leaves that are threadlike and grassy. The plant is also smaller than common species, to about 8", and with smaller flowers, so the effect is much more delicate than that of its larger cousins. The flowers are about 1" across, light pink, and with wavy-margined sepals, produced in autumn. The leaves on this plant are replaced as old ones fade, so it is nearly evergreen in most climates.
